Oprah's life coach Martha Beck explains how creativity toggles off anxiety, and shares the trauma and awakening behind her work.

Dr. Martha Beck — Harvard-trained sociologist and world-renowned life coach, best known as Oprah Winfrey's life coach. She is the author of multiple books, including The Way of Integrity and Beyond Anxiety, and teaches neurology-based techniques for managing anxiety.
Martha Beck argues that anxiety is a left-hemisphere 'spiral' that can be switched off by deliberately engaging the brain's right hemisphere through sensory imagination and creativity. She walks Steven Bartlett through live exercises (imagining eating an orange, mirror-writing his signature) to demonstrate the calm-art-transcendence framework from her book. Interwoven is her personal story: childhood sexual abuse by her father, a strict Mormon upbringing, decades of suicidal ideation and autoimmune illness, and a near-death 'light' experience during surgery that led her to stop lying and leave her family, religion, marriage and academia. She discusses why young men and young women suffer differently, the loss of ancestral rites of passage, and the South African concept of Ubuntu. The conversation closes on finding purpose where 'your deep gladness and the world's deep hunger meet.'
