Peter Thiel and Joe Rogan range over tech stagnation, AI passing the Turing test, nuclear power, conspiracies, and collapsing birth rates.

Joe Rogan Experience #2190 - Peter Thiel
The guest

Peter Thiel — Billionaire investor and entrepreneur, PayPal co-founder, Palantir and Founders Fund founder, contrarian tech thinker

The gist

Peter Thiel argues the US is in an era of relative technological stagnation, with intense progress only in the world of bits (computers, internet, AI) while the physical world of atoms has been stuck for 50 years. He frames ChatGPT passing the Turing test as a bigger deal than the unattained dream of superintelligence, comparable to the internet circa 1999. The pair detour through nuclear power's true demise (India getting the bomb, dual-use risk), the engineering and motivational mysteries of the pyramids, the origins of politics and religion, and psychedelics. They spend a long stretch on conspiracy theories: Epstein as an intelligence/tax operation, Bill Gates's philanthropy as whitewashing and a divorce strategy, the JFK and Trump assassination attempts, and an alleged decline in deep-state competence. They close on AI's future, China's potential to regulate it, and a bleak discussion of worldwide birth-rate collapse and human extinction.

Big reveals

  • Thiel's alternate theory: nuclear power really stopped not because of Three Mile Island or Chernobyl but because India weaponizing US-transferred reactor tech (1974) exposed its dual-use danger.
  • Discussion of the Egyptian Heb Sed festival as possibly replacing a ritual murder of the pharaoh, who was later turned into a living god instead.
  • Thiel claims the LSD counterculture started as an MK Ultra project, with Ken Kesey getting paid $75/day for drug experiments at Menlo Park veterans hospital.
  • Thiel's framing of compromise: in some institutions you only get promoted if you ARE compromised, so you can be controlled.
  • Thiel's alternate Epstein/Gates theory: Epstein advised Gates on locking marital assets into the foundation to deny Melinda half the money in divorce.
  • Claim that Melinda Gates received only about one-tenth of the assets in the divorce instead of half.
  • Thiel asks whether 1963 America, capable of assassinating a president, was a higher-functioning society than today's deep state too incompetent to stop a rooftop shooter.
  • A demographer's extrapolation: at one baby per woman, in roughly 990 years only one person would be left on Earth.

Things worth remembering

  • California has ~40 million people and ~$4 trillion GDP, about the same GDP as Germany (80M) or Japan (125M).
  • Thiel notes four zero-tax states have essentially no cities: Alaska, Wyoming, South Dakota, New Hampshire.
  • Thiel compares AI in 2023-24 to the internet in 1999: clearly transformative but also a bubble that takes ~15-20 years to dominate.
  • Chinese electricity from nuclear stayed around 4-5% for a decade because copying over-safe Western designs makes nuclear costlier than coal.
  • The Great Pyramid of Giza contains about 2,300,000 stones, some moved from quarries 500 miles away, with king's chamber stones up to 80 tons.
  • Thiel claims by 2007 Guantanamo detainees were safer than a suspected cop killer in Manhattan once torture was formalized in the John Yoo memos.
  • Bill Gates reportedly wanted a Nobel Prize and had Epstein connect him to the head of the Nobel Prize foundation.
  • Thiel recounts PayPal's 1999 plan to beam money via Palm Pilots, voted one of the 10 worst business ideas of 1999.
  • Thiel and Rogan discuss male sperm counts dropping sharply since the 1950s, linked to plastics and microplastics.
  • Birth rates are below replacement in all 50 US states, including Mormon Utah; South Korea's total fertility rate is around 0.7.
